orning sweet. The dance of a thousand rillsMaking music before her feet?Tis Liberty, fairest of all the daughters of Time and of Thought* Lowell was not as popular as Longfellow, but his bestlines contain that beautys acme described by him asThe waves poise before it break and curl. It is, however, chiefly as critic and essayist that he isbest known to-day. In his three books of literary criti-cism and fancy, Fireside Travels, Among My Books,My Study Windows, he proved himself to be Americasmost scholarly critic. The old English authors Chaucer,Spenser, the dramatists of Elizabeths reign, attracted hisattention particularly. But his catholicity of taste wasalso accompanied by a catholicity of subjects. In MyGarden Acquaintance, and A Good Word for Winter,he displayed notable graces of style, and his paper Ona Certain Condescension in Foreigners, was a capitalretort courteous to the woes inflicted upon America byforeign critics, and continues to be a compensating solaceeven to this day.

AMERICAN 433 EMERSON The most potent force in New England thought wasRalph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882). For more than twocenturies his ancestors were Congregational ministers. His father, Rev. William Emerson, died in 1811, and hismother was assisted by relatives in providing for her sonseducation. William, the elder, went to Germany, andbeing unsettled in faith, gave up the intention of enter-ing the ministry, and became a lawyer. Waldo studieddivinity with Channing and Andrews Norton, and beganto preach in 1827. He became assistant to Rev. HenryWare in the Second Church of Boston, and soon had entirecharge. At the end of 1832, being unwilling to dispensethe Lords Supper, he resigned the pastorate. His wifehad died in that year, and he resolved to go to Europe. Hewent to Italy and France, then to England, and foundhis way to Carlyles remote humble home at Craigenput-tock. The two great thinkers formed a notable friendshipwhich was maintained by correspondence through theirlives. Emerson
