ious parts thus passed to other owners by inheritanceor sale. The house, like many of the more important housesin the country, has a court. Its shape is bent and oblong, andconformed to the direction of the old town wall and of a streetextending nearly parallel to it. The outer side, or that towardsthe suburbs, has been cleared to view, and shows the high, plain,primitive defensive works. The front, towards the street andtown, is lower, and, although much of it is in simple style, it isfar more, and even richly, ornamented. The chief feature isa large arched entrance, with a smaller one beside it for un-mounted persons, or for use when the main door was closed.Above the archways is a large canopied niche, intended for thestatue of Charles VII. on horseback. The magnificence andpicturesqueness of the structure are concentrated around thecourt, which is irregular, and lavishly enriched by the elabo-rated fancies of the mediaeval mind. The courtyard, on its inner side, presents the chief facade,!with two high stories that have shafted windows, a tall roof withdormers, and three angular and decorated towers, of differentdesign, on which are cone-shaped roofs. Along the other sidesare open cloisters, or arcades. The ornament is everywhereabundant. Over the great gate 2 is a chapel, that perhaps istwenty feet in length and width, and of greater height. Therich original stone carvings done in stone and wood remain, allunrestored except by recent coloring and gilding, with whichthe chapel throughout is now decorated.
