Appeals were made both bycivil and military officials in the Northwest who urgedthat such a road was necessary to bring the regioninto contact with the rest of the Union, to facihtatethe settlem.ent of the Territory, to increase land sales,and to give the people already there an outlet for theirproducts. Governor Cass showed that such a roadcould be m.ade a branch of the Cumberland NationalRoad, thus bringing Detroit into direct communica-tion with the Capitol. Thus the agreement made withthe Indians fifteen years before was to be carried out.This was the first regular grant made by the federalgovernment with a view to promote the settlementand defence of Michigan.^- Twenty thousand dollarsalso were appropriated for the improvement of theroad built by the soldiers from Detroit to the Maumee.^^In 1827 the first stage coach line between Detroit andOhio was established.^ Previous to this date the mailto and from Detroit was carried on horseback throughthe Black Swamp.^^ About 1820 settlers began to push inland from theDetroit River^*^ and with the great immigration follow-ing the opening of the Erie Canal, roads to the interiorbecame absolutely essential. After 1825 several roadswere projected to lead out of Detroit. Congress ap-propriated three thousand dollars for the laying outof a road from Detroit to Chicago.^^ Two years latertwenty thousand dollars were appro
