It marks a position of the British Armys en-campment in Germantown, as the following paragraph will dis-close : The main body of the British occupied ground nearly atright angles with the main street. The front line on the School-house Lane to the west, and the Church Lane (its opposite) tothe east. The park was in the area, south of the market-house,and fronting the house of David Deshler (now S. B. Morris),in which General Howe had his quarters. The second lineformed a parallel, at about one-fourth of a mile in the rear, andflanking the road near the old six-mile stone, before the door ofH. Conyngham, Esq.—Watson*s Annals. No. 5219 Main Street was owned from 1775 until hisdeath in 1795 by John Bringhurst. He was a prominentcitizen of Germantown and one of the founders of the Academy.He was among the first to engage in the building of the well-known Germantown wagons.
