wnofficials in view of taxation, after the passing of the Actof Parliament in 1536 dissolving the smaller monasterieswhich had an income of less than £200 a year, Tinternwas apparently adjudged to fall within that limit. Forsome reason, which does not appear, the abbot was sentfor by Crumwell up to London, as we know from hisreply saying, I have received your letters this Saturdaymorning by the servant of John Winter, of Bristol, direct-ing me to come at once to you. ... Had I had them onFriday I should have started at once, but now will waittill Monday, over the High Feast of Our Blessed Lady,probably March 25, 1537. Whatever may have been thebusiness, it was probably connected with the then impor-tant matter of the forced suppression of the house. Itwas taken possession of by Henry, Earl of Worcester, inthe name of the King, on September i, 1537, and shortlyafterwards that nobleman had a grant from the Crownof the property. TINTERN defacing the ^^ superfluous buildings, as the wantondestruction was called, have come down to us. As thehistory of these dissolutions was much the same in everycase it may be of interest to give the account of what tookplace in regard to another Cistercian house in the wordsof one who was a boy at the time and who heard it fromone actually present. In the plucking down of thesehouses, he writes, ^^ for the most part this order wastaken: that the visitors should come suddenly upon everyhouse unawares. . . . For as soon as the visitors wereentered within the gates, they called the abbot and otherofficers of the house and caused them to deliver all thekeys and took an inventory of all their goods, both withindoors and without. For of all such beasts, horses, sheep,and such cattle as were abroad in pasture or grange-places, the visitors caused to be brought into their pres-ence. And when they had done so (they) turnedthe abbot and all his convent and household forth ofdoors. This
