din the year 1231 or 1232 at Titchfield inHampshire by Peter de Rupibus, Bishop ofWinchester. This prelate had already established HalesOwen, another house of the same Order in Shropshire,and he brought thence a colony of religious and gavethem his manor of Titchfield for the purpose of a secondfoundation. The abbey was placed on the banks of theriver Titchfield in the hollow of a valley which reachesdown to the tidal mouth of the stream which there findsits way to the sea outside the Southampton water. The religious were of the Order of Premontre, whichhad been founded in the early part of the twelfth cen-tury by St. Norbert. On Christmas Day, 1121, the whitehabit of the canons regular was given to Norbert andsome forty companions at a place called Premontre, inthe diocese of Laon, and for many centuries this monas-tery remained the mother house of the Order, which wascalled after it the Premonstratensian Order. TITCHFIELD Scotland during the lifetime of St. Norbert. In Eng-land the first colony was established in 1143 at New-house, in Lincolnshire, the community being furnishedfrom the Abbey of Lisques, near Calais. Within 100years the spread of the new Order in this country hadbeen phenomenal, and Newhouse itself had establishedeleven abbeys in various parts of England. Titchfield,which was commenced in 1231, less than a century afterthe new Order had first taken root in the country, waspractically the last of the English foundations, whichnumbered in all thirty-five. Bishop Peter de Rupibus in establishing the abbeyreserved to himself and his successors in the See of Win-chester the patronage of the abbey, which remained tothem in right of the bishopric until the dissolution of themonasteries in the sixteenth century. It was upon August15, 1231, that Richard, the first abbot, and his fellowcanons reached Titchfield to take possession of their newfoundation, and in memory of the day the hou
