to resign and Richard Blytonwas appointed in his stead. William Helmesly does notadmit that his act was rightly called a resignation, andin a letter, addressed to Crumwell himself, he speaks ofhis having been deposed. A difficulty subsequentlyrose about the pension that was promised him, and theabbots of Fountains and Byland were appointed byCrumwell to determine the amount. This they did atRipon, where, having discussed the matter with the actualabbot and his predecessor, they fixed the pension at £44a year. The commissioners to take surrenders of religioushouses arrived in Yorkshire at the beginning of Decem-t^c^j 1539- Their names were George Lawson, RichardBellassis, William Blithman and James Rokeby. On thefifteenth of that month they wrote to Crumwell fromYork that they had quietly taken the surrrender, anddissolved five or six abbeys and friaries and had arrangedabout the safe custody of the lead and bells. RIEVAULX reached from Byland on December 3, 1539. The ac-counts of these officials subsequently presented to theAugmentation Office afford us some particulars. Thegoods of the abbey when sold produced £281 5s. 4d.; thelead from the roofs and gutters had been melted down to140 fodders, and there were five bells, whether brokenup or still whole is not stated. The plate of the abbeyis set down as 522 ounces, including ten chalices weighing185 ounces. Of these items the plate had been sent up toLondon, and also £181 5s. 4d. had been paid to the royaltreasury. Pensions had been promised to the abbot andtwenty-three religious, and at the time of the accountthese had been paid. The abbot also had been given thedebts due to the house. In a subsequent pension list thename of the late abbot is found set down as having aclaim for his promised pension of £44.
