and a further detention there foranother term of ten years. Another canon accused ofapostasy in the same sense was ordered to Welbeck toundergo similar punishment. Bishop Redman enjoinedthe abbot to try and increase the number of the reli-gious at Torre by every means in his power, and hegave certain regulations for the community life. Thebrethren were not to drink after Compline withouturgent need, and never without full permission. Thetime of Vespers was to be at 4 oclock, both summerand winter, and all were to be in bed by 8 p.m. Hepraises the general administration of the abbot, how-ever, and does not find anything of grave importanceto correct or to refer to the General Chapter. In his next visitation on September 21, 1482, BishopRedman is able to praise the administration of AbbotCade in high terms. In obtaining what is for thegood of the monastery, he says, the abbot is provi-dent and circumspect beyond any other abbot of theOrder. At this time one of the canons was accused 200

The visitor finds thatsilence might be kept better, and that the tonsure wasgetting too big, but there are no grave matters to be cor-rected or reported to the Chapter. Incidentally, we seefrom the document that the abbot was getting somewhatold and infirm—he was dead before the next visit—and the bishop charges the community to try andassist him when his troubles and sickness should in-crease upon him and he should become less able to seeto all things himself. It is six years before there is any record of anothervisit to the abbey. This time, for some reason—outof sollicitude for the monastery the document says—the bishop did not actually come to Torre itself. Heremained at their house of Durford in Sussex, andthither the abbot and a proctor for the communitywent to meet him. In this visit he gives the bestreport to his investigations.
