Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In 1794–95, seventeen-year-old William Henry Ireland presented his father, the artist and antiquarian Samuel Ireland, with a cache of Shakespearian manuscripts he claimed to have discovered in the attic of an "acquaintance." Samuel eagerly displayed them to a Shakespeare-worshipping public, including James Boswell and the Prince of Wales, and published a facsimile edition. Among the papers was this love letter to "Anna Hatherrewaye" from Shakespeare, with a lock of Shakespeare's hair affixed. After the authenticity of the papers was called into question by the scholar Edmund Malone in a 400-page "Inquiry," W. H. Ireland confessed to the forgeries. .(Folger call number: W.b. 496, f. 93)
