Steam-boats used to come here at highest stage of water, but itwas an irregular means of transportation, and since the railroad has beenin operation, the traffic by river has been almost discontinued. Beyond Eugene the road winds for twenty-five miles among the beauti-ful hills of Lane County, revealing charming landscapes at every turn. Atlast the Calipooia Mountains, a short range separating the Willamette andUmpqua valleys, are crossed by a low divide, from the summit of which,looking back, a magnificent view is presented of the broad, lowland coun-try lying between the Cascades and the Coast Mountains. There are pleasant villages on the road beyond Eugene—Springfield,Goshen, Cresswell and Latham, each of which is a good point for trade.Descending from the Calipooia Mountains towards the Umpqua Valley,Comstocks, a station on the mountain side, is passed; and afterwardsDrain, a centre of business situated at the edge of the beautiful YoncallaValley, is reached. Oakland—(181 miles from Portland)—is a town of importance. TheUmpqua Valley is a hill country, and the heights are crested with groves ofwhite oak trees. Narrow valleys wind among these hills and offer romanticsituations for homes. Sheep husbandry supersedes farming here, andfleeces of tine* quality are exported.
