The movement of the enemy hadbecome so developed by the afternoonof the 1st, and was so evidently directedto Fairfax Court House, with a view ofturning my right, that I made the nec-essary disposition of troops to fight abattle between the Little River pikeand the road from Centreville to Fair-fax Court House. I sent General Hooker, early in theafternoon, to Fairfax Court House, anddirected him to assemble all the troopsthat were in the vicinity, and to pushforward to Germantown with his ad-vance. I directed McDowell to moveback along the road to Fairfax CourtHouse as far as Difficult Creek, and toconnect by his right with Hooker. Renowas to push forward to the north of theroad from Centreville to Fairfax, in thedirection of Chantilly. Heintzelmanscorps was directed to take post on theroad between Centreville and Fairfax,immediately in the rear of Reno. Frank-lin took post on McDowells left andrear. Sumner was posted on the left of

A very severe action occurred,in the midst of a terrific thunder-storm,and was terminated shortly after dark.The enemy was driven back entirelyfrom our front, but during that engage-ment we lost two of the best, and oneof our most distinguished officers—Ma-jor-General Kearney and Brigadier-General Stevens, who were both killedwhile gallantly leading their commands,and in front of their line of battle.
