Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe grave of Sister Frances Emma (Fanny) Hines.jpg |
English: The grave of Sister Frances Emma (Fanny) Hines, who died of pneumonia in South Africa on 7th August 1900. The large marble cross and plinth was erected by her fellow nursing sisters and the 1st Victorian Bushmen's Contingent and hospital staff, at Bulawayo cemetery (grave number 541). She was buried with full military honours. Major William Bubbin, Commander of Victoria's Citizen Bushmen, collected money for a memorial headstone, but the money never reached Bulawayo, according to Captain William McKnight, who had to pay for most of the cost himself. At the time of her death, Sr Hines was nursing at Enkeldoom and cared solely for 26 patients, a factor which contributed to her poor health and eventual death. |
