The forearms and hand areplaced, with the palm of the hand downwards, upon thesurface of the trestle on which is a caliper rule \ the edgesof the table, the axis of the forearm and the hand, andthe graduated stem of the ruler all being parallel. Theelbow is placed against the fixed arm of the rule, and theloose arm is then brought up to the middle finger aridthe measurement read off on the scale.
