Lord. Mr. Hacker quotes the following instance ofhow a Christians faith was tried:— Gurupatham is a Christian of about twelveyears standing. By trade he is a woodcutter.A short time since, a Hindu met him, and, knowingthat he was a Christian, said, With all yourfaith in Jesus Christ, will you go to a certainwood and cut down a tree in the demon-grove?(These demons, according to native notions, havetheir dwellings in groves.) The Christian mansaid he would, as he was challenged, and takinghis axe went to the supposed sacred spot. Acrowd of demon-worshippers had gathered roundto witness the scene—evidently expecting someevil would happen to him. The man knelt downand prayed, then rose and began to chop. Whenhe was about half way through the tree, he fellfrom exhaustion. The demon devotees set up ashout, and, running to a pagoda, asked a Brahmanpriest what they should do. The priest gavethem sacred ashes, and told them quickly to smearhim with the ashes, and make him say he was quite

With this poor Christian man, who had only afew years emerged from demon-worship into thelight of the Gospel, this was a real trial of faith,a real fight with the devil. Vethakan, whose brother-in-law was sick, hadhim removed to his own house. Finding there wasno hope of recovery, the patients heathen relativescame to Vethakan and said, We intend to makea sacrifice to the devil to-night. It must beperformed in your house, but you need not take anypart in the ceremony. Vethakan sat silent for awhile, then said, Why cant you perform it inthe daytime ? Why choose the night ? The replywas, To guard you against the displeasure of yourteachers. Vethakan said, The Vetham (Bible),which I believe in, is neither of the pastor nor thecatechist, but it is of Jesus Christ, to whom day andnight are the same
