ean. It is very cruel too, Said little Alice Neal; I wonder if he knew How sad the bird would feel ? A little boy hung down his head,And went and hid behind the bed,For he stole that pretty nestFrom poor little yellow breast; And he felt so full of shame,He didnt like to tell his name. L. MARIA CHILD. GOOD-NIGHT AND GOOD-MORNING A FAIR little girl sat under a tree, Sewing as long as her eyes could see : Then smoothed her work, and folded it right, And said, Dear work, Good-Night! Good-Night I* Such a number of rooks came over her head,Crying Caw! caw! on their way to bed:She said, as she watched their curious flight,Little black things, Good-Night! Good-Night! The horses neighed, and the oxen lowed; The sheeps Bleat! bleat! came over the road :All seeming to say, with a quiet delight,Good little girl, Good-Night! Good-Night! She did not say to the sun Good-Night!Though she saw him there, like a ball of light; For she knew he had Gods time to keepAll over the world, and never could sleep.

THE GOLDEN STAIRCASE 0 The tall pink foxglove bowed his head-The violets curtsied and went to bed;And good little Lucy tied up her hair,And said, on her knees, her favourite prayer. And while on her pillow she softly lay,She knew nothing more till again it was day:And all things said to the beautiful sun,Good-Morning, Good-Morning! our work is begun. LOUD HOUGHTON. THE LITTLE MAIDEN AND THE LITTLE BIRD LITTLE bird! little bird! come to me 1I have a green cage ready for thee—Beauty-bright flowers I 11 bring thee anew,And fresh, ripe cherries, all wet with dew. Thanks, little maiden, for all thy care,—But I love dearly the clear, cool air,And my snug little nest in the old oak tree. Little bird! little bird ! stay with me. Nay, little damsel! away I 11 flyTo greener fields and warmer sky; When spring returns with pattering rain,You 11 hear my merry song again. Little bird ! little bird ! who 11 guide theeOver the hill
