Inthis poor island was erected the first Christianchurch of the whole district, now so populous,rich and industrious, which extends from Hull toEdinburgh. This is an exaggeration. If York-shire is excluded it is true, but in YorkshirePaulinus certainly put up some buildings. Thiswas Lindisfarne (afterwards known as Holy Island),the Mother Church, the religious capital of thenorth of England and south of Scotland, theresidence of the first sixteen bishops of North-umbria, the sanctuary and monastic citadel of thewhole country round—the Iona of the Anglo-Saxons. The resemblance of Lindisfarne to Iona,of the colony to the metropolis, the daughterto the mother, is striking. These two isles, oneso celebrated, so renowned, so influential overtwo great and hostile races, have the samesombre and melancholy aspect, full of a wildand savage sadness.
