It is with great satisfaction that I write a brief pre-fatory notice to the first Memoir that has been publishedby the Geological Survey of England and Wales onpart of the Geology of the Lake District of Cumber-land and Westmoreland, The numerous details of thestratigraphical relations of the region, and of aU theintricate relations of the volcanic and other igneousrocks of the Area, are of a kind that could not have beendescribed till the mapping of the country had beenthoroughly done, and, as far as I know, this is the firsttime that it has been distinctly stated in print, that forthe most part these volcanic masses, unlike the lavas andashes of North Wales, were accumulated on the landand not in the sea; a view that I have held and oftenstated, almost ever since the mapping of the old Silurianvolcanic area of Cumbria was commenced. I have no doubt that Mr. Wards Memoir will bewelcome to all geologists, adding, as it does, a greatamount of new matter to what was previously knownof t
