amptonnorthward the valley floor, which is mostly very flat, is from 5 to 10miles wide, and from Northampton southward it is 15 to 20 mileswide. Several bold hills or small mountains rise above the floor ofthe valley adding a touch of real grandeur to the landscape. With-out doubt the most picturesque part of the entire Connecticut Valleyis in the general vicinity of Northampton. Perhaps most impressiveof all is the Mount Tom Range several miles long rising boldlymany hundreds of feet above the general level of the valley (seefigure 2). The climax is reached at Mount Tom whose summitlies 1214 feet above the sea and 1000 or more feet above the valleyfloor on the east and west sides. Each year from the top of thissentinel of the valley many people enjoy the view of the pictur-esque landscape. Mount Nonotuck at the north end of the rangeshows an altitude of 852 feet. From Mount Tom southward a much lower though very distinctridge rises above the valley floor all the way into Connecticut.

The summit of Mount Holyokeshows an altitude of 954 feet, and that of Mount Norwottock, severalmiles farther east, 1115 feet. Mount Warner (altitude 500 feet) forms a conspicuous featureof the valley landscape between Hatfield and Amherst. East of Sunderland the steep faced mountain ridge called MountToby rises boldly 1000 feet or more above the valley lowland.Viewed from the west or southwest it shows a strikingly even ** sky-line, the highest point of which lies 127^ feet above sea level. It isseparated from the great eastern highland region by a deep narrowvalley. Between Sunderland and South Deerfie
