lO The Geological History of the is impressed with the evenness of the sky-hne in all directions.Chesterfield village itself lies about 1500 feet above sea level, andthis is approximately the altitude of most of the higher points of thelandscape for miles around. Very soon the observer notices thatthe upland is not a relatively smooth plateau surface but rather amaze of hills and valleys. Most of the very hilly western plateauis drained by two large tributaries of the Connecticut—WestfieldRiver and Deerfield River. A perfect network of swift streamstributary to these two rivers drains practically the whole westernupland except parts of the eastern side where some streams takedirect courses into the Connecticut. The great eastern upland is also a very hilly plateau in allimportant respects like the western upland except that it is in generala few hundred feet lower. Excellent views may be obtained fromPelham and Shutesbury which are at high altitudes (iico to 1200feet) on the plateau
