4 inches in width. Thereare several styles of good net poles for sale, and in the case of dirt orclay courts, stationery posts^may be used, firmly fixed in founda-tions, say two or three feet deep. The top of ;the net .is required tobe three feet from the ground in the middle of the court and 33^ feetat the ends. It is advisable to have a strip of white cotton clothabout three inches wide running along the top of the net as it greatlyimproves the sight. An iron prong three feet high is most convenelent to maintain the exact height of the net in the middle and maybe procured of any dealer in tennis supplies. Baok-net or stop nets are large nettings placed at the ends ofthe court some distance from the base lines, their object being tostop the past balls and save the annoyance of traveling after them.Be sure that your back-nets as well as seats for spectators are re- LAWN TENNIS.

Too often is this importantconsideration lost sight of in club courts as well as private ones, andone of the most enterprising and hospitable clubs of the countryhas rather fallen into dislike among many of the experts simplyfrom this very fact of having the stop-nets in too close proximity tothe court. A club court requires the constant attention of a skilled grounds-man to obtain the best results, and should be carefully rolled, wateredand marked each lay. This remark applies equally as well to a pri-vate court, if anything more than a fashionable ornament is desired. THE EAOKET.
