The game,however, is one of the oldest in existence if one is to believe thesculptured and painted antiquities of ancient Greece and Egypt.Lexicographers agree that the words bowle (old English) and*bowl of the present day, are derived from bulla, Latin forbubble. The following have all a bearing on the subject: InFrench we have boulc, bowl; balle, ball; billes, billiardballs and marbles; Icelandic, bolle; old high German, ballaand palla; Spanish, bala; Italian, balla, and the Greek,ac^alpa, pela, all meaning ball.
