CHAPTER VII THE REGIONS OF ENGLAND : REGIONAL DIVISIONS IN our search for regional boundaries, we begin, notonly with seven regional capitals already indicated with sufficient clearness, but with a good manydata which help to indicate the general extent andcharacter of the proposed Regions. But clearly thedrawing of boundaries is a matter about which thereis likely to be far more keen dispute than the indica-tion of natural centres; for the boundaries will be inmost cases drawn through tracts of comparativelysparse population, and will be drawn differentlyaccording as more or less importance is assigned togeographical, historical, economic and other causes.In the actual arrangement of Regions tentatively pro-posed in this book, I have made it my aim to follow,as far as possible, the boundaries of the existingCounties, not so much because I believe that, in allparts of England, the dwellers in a particular Countyfeel any strong sense of County corporate life, butbecause such a method hfutureoflocalgov00cole
