and addressed it to Parson Elkin, the KentuckyBaptist preacher who had sometimes tarried with the Lincolns intheir humble home in Kentucky. It was a great favor to ask ofthe good man; for his journey to preach a sermon over the graveof Nancy Lincoln would take him one hundred miles or more, farfrom his customary stamping ground. But, in due time, Abra-ham received an answer to his letter, and the parson promised tocome when his calls of duty led him near the Indiana line. Early in the following summer, when the trees wTere thegreenest and the forest was most beautiful, the preacher came on FOURTEEN YEARS IN INDIANA 37 his errand of kindness. It was a bright and sunny Sabbath morn-ing, when, due notice having been sent around through all theregion, men, women and children gathered from far and near tohear the funeral sermon of Nancy Lincoln. Two hundred of them, all told, some on footand some on horseback, and others drawn in ox-carts. All wereintent on the great event of the season—the preaching of NancyLincolns funeral sermon.
