ng is applied with some advan-tage to beds with large numbers of seedlings in dense stand. Thesaving lies in reducing the cost of transplanting all the seed-bed stock, but the stimulated root growth which follows transplanting is lost tothe plants left in the seed bed, which are thus inferior to seedlingstransplanted once or twice. The slow or rapid growth of \arious kinds of seedlings during thetirst two or three years may determine the length of time seedlingsshould stand in the seed bed, as well as that necessary for nurserytraining. The slow growth of conifers makes it possible to leave themin the seed bed two years, afterwards transplanting them to thenursery for one or more seasons. If 1-year-old conifers are trans-planted from the seed bed it is advisable to give them about two yearsin the nursery (see figs. 2 and 8). As a rule, broadleaf seedlings growmuch more rapidly and need less time in the nursery. Walnuts, soft Bulletin No. 29. Div. of Forestry, U, S. Dept of Agr Plate V.

TRANSPLANTING OF SEEDLINGS. 53 Maples, Catalpas, Locusts, Cotfeetree, and others, may attain sufficientsize and vigor to be fit for final planting even at the end of the firstseason in the seed bed (especially if they have had plenty of roona andfrequent cultivation), but they are better for one year in the nurser)^(See PI. V.) Among the broadleaf species which usually grow moreslowly for the first season are the Birches, hard Maples, Ashes, Cher-ries, Hackberries, Oaks, native Mulberries, and Elms, and they shouldtherefore remain in the nursery for one or two seasons before finalplanting. It should be added that the growth of seedlings of the same kind indifierent soils is so variable that it is difficult to state the exact
