s them. This is also a roving species, and is taken on the same grounds asthe bass—preferring, however, tideways and rapid currents. Weseldom take more than four or livi- salt, syater trout in a days fish-ing, together with other species. One great pleasure in anglingalong this coast is the variety of fish which one encounters, and youcan never predict whether your next capture will weigh one poundor twenty. ) CHAPTER lY. The Reb Grouper. Red Grouper.—Epinephelus morio—(Cuv. Gill).—I give to thiswell known and valuable food fish of the Florida coast the name af-fixed to it by scientists, as I suppose, though I have not identifiedthe species. Jordan and Gilbert in their Synopsis write of thegroupers, that the synonomyof the species is much confused, and thename to be adopted uncertain. Their description of ^. wioWo seemmore like the common grouper than that of any other which theydescribe. Holbrook in his Fishes of South Carolina describes itunder the name of Serranus erythrogaster. The name grouper is found in Romans List of the Fishes of theEast Florida Coast. How far north it occurs I do not know, but itis abundant and large along the island of Cuba, as I am informed. It is a thick-set, robust fish, of the perch family, with hard spines inthe dorsal fin ; large head and mouth, with many sharp teeth. Color, light olive, mottled with darker lines, like tortoise shell. Fins tippedwith
