The fish market Oil on panel Signed lower right L Defrance, de / Liège. 51 x 70,5 cm; 20⅛ by 27¾ in. Léonard Defrance was born in Liége in 1735. He trained with the painter Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Coclers as well as with Laurent Pecheux at the Académie de France in Rome. He also studied the art of Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) and David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) during a trip to Holland in 1773. He enjoyed considerable success in Paris in the 1780s and 1790s with his genre scenes like this Fish market, in which he painted his contemporaries with accuracy and humour. In Liège, the delivery of fish was an event, announced by the fishmongers in the Gazette de Liège. Defrance places the fishmonger in the centre of the composition, but the many humorous scenes around the main subject animate the composition realistically and amusingly, but also with audacity. Members of the Church were his preferred target: a nun and a soldier are clearly flirting, while a monk holding an eel is looking lustfully at its seller. This freedom, revealing his political opinions, is probably the reason why he had to flee Liège and the regime of the prince-bishop César-Constantin-François de Hoensbroeck for Paris in 1784. Like other paintings by the artist, The Fish market was so popular with art lovers that Léonard Defrance made several versions: the authors of the artist’s catalogue raisonné list at least six. Françoise Dehousse, Maïté Pacco and Maurice Pauchen have revealed that this subject appeared for the first time at the Societé d’Emulation’s exhibition in Liège in 1786 and again in 1788. It is possible that this is the present painting, but it is difficult to connect the work with early mentions because of the similarity of replicas and the terse nature of contemporary descriptions. It could, however, be the painting described by Jules Helbig at the beginning of the century in his work La peinture au pays de Liège et sur les bords de la Meuse (1905, p. 476), which was at that time in the collection of Monsieur Aug. Visschers in Brussels, having been in the Desoer collection, with The Charlatan as its pendant (see previous lot). The comic scenes and rich composition, together with Léonard Defrance’s skill as a draughtsman, make this Fish Market a charming, amusing and engaging painting. As would also be the case for the younger artist Boilly, who would enjoy huge success a few years later with similar genre scenes, the viewer can only admire the talent displayed in this composition, with its profusion of skilfully executed motifs.Français : Léonard Defrance (Liège 1735 - 1805)

Il s’est formé avec le peintre Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Coclers ainsi qu’auprès de Laurent Pecheux à l'Académie de France à Rome. Il étudie également l’art d’Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) et de David Teniers le Jeune (1610-1690) lors d’un voyage en Hollande en 1773. Il connut un succès considérable à Paris dans les années 1780 et 1790 grâce à des scènes de genre comme ce Marché aux poissons où il peint ses contemporains avec précision et humour. A Liège, les arrivages de poissons étaient un événement. Ils étaient annoncés par les marchands dans la Gazette de Liège. Defrance place au centre de la scène le marchand de poisson mais autour du sujet principal de nombreuses saynètes animent la composition avec vérité, drôlerie mais aussi insolence. Les ecclésiastiques sont sa cible de prédilection, on remarque notamment une religieuse et un militaire en pleine conversation galante mais aussi un moine, tenant une anguille à la main regardant une marchande avec un air concupiscent. C’est probablement cette liberté de ton révélateur de ses opinions politiques qui pousse l’artiste à fuir Liège et le régime du prince-évêque César-Constantin-François de Hoensbroeck pour Paris en 1784. A l’instar d’autres compositions de l’artiste, Le Marché aux poissons a dû connaître un succès tel auprès des amateurs de peinture que Léonard Defrance en exécuta plusieurs versions. Les auteurs du catalogue raisonné de l’œuvre de l’artiste recensent au moins six versions. Françoise Dehousse, Maïté Pacco et Maurice Pauchen révèlent que ce sujet apparaît pour la première fois à l’exposition de l’Emulation à Liège en 1786 et se retrouve à nouveau en 1788. Il est possible qu'il s'agisse du tableau présenté ici mais il est difficile de lier notre tableau aux mentions anciennes en raison de la similarité des répliques et du caractère succinct des descriptions de l’époque. Il pourrait cependant s’agir du tableau décrit par Jules Helbig au début du siècle dans son ouvrage La peinture au pays de Liège et sur les bords de la Meuse (1905, p. 476) qui était alors dans la collection de M. Aug. Visschers à Bruxelles, après avoir été dans celle de M. Desoer, avec pour pendant Le Charlatan (voir lot précédent). La drôlerie et la richesse de la composition associées au talent de dessinateur de Léonard Defrance font de ce Marché aux poissons un tableau à la fois charmant, amusant et captivant. Comme devant les tableaux de son cadet Boilly qui connaîtra un immense succès quelques années plus tard avec des scènes de genre similaires, le spectateur reste admiratif devant le talent mis en œuvre dans cette composition foisonnante de motifs exécutés avec talent. |
