Notes
Item description from the Invaluable website
The artist wrote the following description of Le Bac in a letter to Knoedler & Co.: "I thought of painting that subject in order to present a cross section of all the social classes of the 17th century - noblemen, soldiers, peasants, and beggars; at that time there existed few bridges, so to cross from one bank to another it was necessary to take the ferry. My study for the landscape was made on the bank of the Seine, close to the Forest of Fontainebleau."

In his review of the Salon of 1884, Armand Dayot's description of Le Bac included the following eulogy: "The sky with subtle gradations blends its delicate lightly veiled azure with the early morning fog of the horizon. One experiences a sort of agreeably refreshing sensation before this lovely canvas in which the air moves freely over the water, through the trees, around the figures, giving to each a masterful relief."
