the hut, neithercan the Wetterhorn whose name is so suggestiveof the storms and lightning which so oftendescend upon it. The different huts have many points in common,although they differ considerably in size. Theyare of course built of wood, with a stout doorand small windows, which will indeed open, butwhich are barricaded outside by strong shutterswhen the hut is left empty. Some wooden tables,forms, and a stove, occupy the centre of thefloor, while round three sides there is a woodenbench about 7 feet wide covered with straw. Ona shelf at the back will be seen an array of pairsof enormous boots; they are somewhat like woodenclogs, are lined with felt, and are calculated to holdthe largest foot ever known to climb. One of thefirst things to be done on arriving at a hut is totake off ones own boots which are invariably wet,and put on a pair of these receptacles. OF SWITZERLAND mountain huts depend a large number of blankets. Theseform ones covering for the night, frequentlyalso for the evening when it may be a relief totake off a wet skirt. On a fine evening every-one will sit outside on a form, and look likecomic editions of Roman Senators, with stripedtogas and the letters S.A.C. (Swiss AlpineClub) coming as an oi*nament, generally in themiddle of the back. There is a little touch of human nature whichI have noticed with regard to Christian and theblankets. When we are early arrivals he says, Now ladies, I find you the best blankets, andhe proceeds to spread over the straw enough tokeep out the most fearsome cold—he may evenfold up some to make a pillow : he is an indi-vidualist. But when we are late and manypeople are there before us he becomes a com-munist, and remarks as his quick eyes view theassembly from a long way off: It is a ruleof the Swiss Alpine Club that everybody sharesequally.
