All misshapen and unsound bricks should be rejected.A good hard brick will ring when struck by a trowel.In good practice bricks are wetted to the point of sat-uration before being laid in the wall. They have agreat avidity for water, especially soft bricks, conse-quently if they are not previously saturated they willabsorb too much water from the mortar and cause itto crumble. Common bricks are those which have no specialcare taken in their manufacture; they are rough andunpressed, and adopt a quality according to the posi-tion in the kiln in which they are burnt. Face bricks,or hard bricks, include various kinds of molded bricks,and are actually shaped and pressed by machinery.They are more expensive, of course.
