greater or less extent to alleviate suffering andcure disease, perhaps there is none more valuable or more generallyapplicable in the treatment of the divers diseases to which man issubject than a safe, prompt and efficient emetic. The safety andefficacy of Fever-wort as an emetic, and the great number of acci-dents and diseases requiring a medickie of this description entitle it,therefore, to rank high with the profession. Rafinesque mentionsthat the leaves of this plant are diaphoretic. They have a tendencyto increase the secretions, and consequently they possess the propertyof raising a sweat in a considerable degree. In fevers the plant isone of the most valuable articles in the catalogue of medicines. Byway of eminence it is called Fever-wort. The extract, which is the best mode of exhibiting TriosteumPerfoliatum, purges in doses of from ten to fifteen grains. . Fivepounds of the root are said to afford two pounds of extract. The.dose of the powder is a scruple to half a drachm.
