oat, is said to have proved useful inthe aphthous sore mouth of children. In Europe the dried root of the Arum macuhdum (whosemedicinal properties are precisely those of the plant underconsideration) is sometimes employed by the common peoplein times of great scarcity as a substitute for bread; and anamylaceous substance is prepared from it in England, calledPortland arrowroot, or Portland sago. This substance is awhite powder, whose particles examined by the microscopeare found to be exceedingly small. They are circular, mullar-shaped, or polyhedral. The angular appearance of some ofthem probably arises from compression. The hilum is circu-lar and apparently lies in a small depression. It cracks in alinear or stellate manner. This substance is very nutriciousand demulcent, affording a light, mild, and agreeable articleof diet, well adapted for the sick and convalescent, and par-ticularly suited from its demulcent properties to bowel com-plaints and diseases of the urinary passages. 4
