s the Lungs. The mechanism of res-piration is not unlike that of a pair of bellows. Whenthe handles are raised the inside of the bellows is madelarger, and the air rushes in to fill the extra space. The chest is a tight box, with only one opening, andthat at the top, — the larynx. If this box be suddenlyenlarged the air will rush in through the opening; thisis called inspiration. When the box ceases to enlarge,no more air enters. Immediately all the parts that wereunder a tension to enlarge the box return to their for-mer condition. Thus the box is made smaller and theair rushes out of the opening at the top ; this is calledexpiration. From this we conclude that air enters thelungs because the chest is made larger; and that it leaves 132 THE ESSENTIALS OF HEALTH. the lungs because the chest is made smaller. Beforediscussing this subject more in detail, it will be well tofix in the mind the shape of the thoracic cavity, its con-tents, and the relation of certain organs to each other.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 43. The position of the lungs, and their relation to certain organs :(1) the trachea ; (2) the clavicle ; (3) the ribs ; (4) the lungs; (5) a darkcurved line, showing the position of the heart ; (6) the diaphragm, extend-ing in a curved direction from one figure to the other; (7) the liver;(8) the stomach ; (9) the sternum. A reference to Pig. 43 will illustrate these points. Thelungs rise above the collar bone, 2, to form the apex ofthe chest: below, they rest upon the curved diaphragm,6, which divides the thoracic from the abdominal cavity. RESPIRATION. 133
