This order was at first united by Linnaeus with the Colea-))tcra, and afterwards arranged by him with the haustellatedIlemiptera, from the construction of the wings. By Geoffroyit was also arranged with the Coleoptera, forming the thirdprimary division of that order. De Geer, however, saw the impropriety of retaining theseinsects in either of these two classes, from each of whichthey differed in the structure of the wings and mouth, or inthe nature of their metamorphoses, and accordingly raisedthem to the rank of a distinct order, to which Olivier subse-quently gave the name of Orthoptera, from the longitudinalor straight (op9og) folding of the wings (Trrcpa).
