ich a number of yachts were pre-sent, a select party of gentlemen dined togetherat the Marine Hotel at West Cowes. On September 2nd, 1814, yacht races, whichare referred to as the annual regatta, took placeand were followed by a dinner at .VldredsHotel, East Cowes, and in 1815 the HampshireTelegraph alludes to many members of theYacht Club, thus showing that the gentlemenwho had been in the habit of arranging theregatta and dining together afterwards, hadpractically banded themselves into some sort ofclub. The Yacht Club was formally constituted at ameeting held on June ist, i8i5,at the ThatchedHouse in St. Jamess Street, London. Thechair was taken by Lord Grantham, and it wasresolved that the club be called The YachtClub. The actual phraseology of the minutesis worth noticing, as showing that in this case,as in the case of the Water Club of Cork, anorganisation in the nature of a club had previ-ously existed, for we find it in the minutes that At a meeting of the members of the Yacht
