The accompanying sketch shows a concentrated effect under the activepole, which in this case is the positive (+), applied to the extensor surfaceof the upper arm. The two parallel longitudinal lines are made to representan ulnar nerve, which is being treated with a ( + ) current, for the localpolar positive effect, while just beyond the local positive ( + ) area, is amore diffuse general ( + ) zone of action. In this case the indifferent orpassive pole is placed so far away as to obliterate any decided inter-polareffect, except in a mild and general way, for tonic effect, which will beexplained more fully under the head of catalysis in another part of the book.
