Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe elbow of capture on the upper Erch - geograph.org.uk - 708215.jpg |
English: The elbow of capture on the upper Erch. An 'elbow of capture' marks the point of diversion of the headwaters of a stream into that of a neighbouring stream. River capture results from rapid headward erosion by one stream until it cuts into the course of its neighbour, causing the headwaters of that stream to be diverted. The former course downstream of the diversion is either left as a dry gap (sometimes called a wind gap) or occupied by a short misfit stream. Here, the abandoned valley below the elbow can be seen on the right of the photo. It is occupied by a small tributary of the Erch.
