Additionalgauge-lines were observed, as shown in the sketch on page 219.in order to determine the distribution of deformation, Failureoccurred at a load of 96600-lb,, or a stress of 1400 lb. persq.in., by crushing the cross. Grades extended diagonallyacross the specimen, through the cross and out into the unloadedarms. Crushing was first noticed at tlie jimd ion of the twolong arms, as shown in Pig. 20. When the specimen was furtherdeformed the long horizontal arm. dropped off, the short onewas ready to drop away, and a cone of crushing was formed inthe cross as shown in Fig. 21. The distribution of deformationon the cross in this test may be seen from the curves of Fig.22 and 23, pages 8S and 37. Possibly the spherical bloclc failedto worlc properly and caused an uncertain distribution of load.
