[edit]DescriptionThe effects of rising sea temperatures on the western Mediterranean basin (Copernicus).jpg |
English: This image shows the Sea Surface Temperature of the western part of the Mediterranean basin, as retrieved from measurements by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 2 February 2022. Researchers of the University of Barcelona conducted a study in the abovementioned area, demonstrating that an increase in sea surface temperature since the 19th century has affected plankton dynamics, resulting in a severe decrease in their primary productivity in this part of the Mediterranean. One of the objectives of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite mission is to accurately measure Sea and Land Surface Temperature using the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) instrument. Coupled with the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) and the Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL), the SLSTR provides accurate and reliable measurements that support oceanic, environmental, and climate monitoring efforts. |
