Description
English: The ecological plaque hypothesis and the aetiology of periodontal diseases. The diagram depicts the dynamic relationship whereby the inflammatory response results in an environmental change, subgingivally, which produces a shift in the balance of the resident microflora. Such a shift predisposes a site to disease. Disease could be prevented not only by inhibiting the pathogens directly but also by interfering with the factors driving the transition.
