an recollection, much distorted of course, of the great empire of thekings of Cnossus. James Baikie (The Sea-kings of Crete (1913), p. 258) says: Theonly difficulty in accepting the identification (of Platos Atlantis with the island ofCrete) is that it is stated that the lost Atlantis lay beyond the Pillars of Hercules; butdoubtless this statement is due to Solons misinterpretation of what was said by hisEgyptian informant, or to the Saite priests endeavor to accommodate his ancient tradi-tion to the wider geographical knowledge of his own time. . . . Almost certainly, then,Platos story gives the Saite version of the actual Egyptian records of the greatnessand the final disaster of the great island state with which Egypt so long maintainedintercourse. Doubtless to the men of the latter part of the Eighteenth Dynasty thesudden blotting out of Minoan trade and influence by the overthrow of Cnossus seemedas strange and mysterious as though Crete had actually been swallowed up by the sea.
