IV, Route 31. 161 N., with a pilgrimage-cliurcli, was the birthplace of Jacob Staiiier(d. 1683),the famous violin-maker, whose house is denoted by a marble tablet withan inscription. To reach the Gnadenwald, the hills on the N. bank of the Inn, wefollow the road to the Salzberg (see below) for 2V2 M., and then ascend tothe right to (V4 hr.) St. Martin (Speckbacher) , St. Michael Oh hr. -, 2870),and (V2 hr.) the Gungl Inn. From this point we descend to (^jx hr.)the church of Maria-Larch and (V2 hr.) Terfens. A very interestingexpedition mav be made from St. Michael to the top of the Walder Alpe(5340); fine views from the Walder-Joch (5340), 20 min. to the E. (to theN. the deep gorge of the Vomperthal)^ and from ihe Ninterhornalm (4990),1/2 hr. to the W.
