recherspitze, Kirchstein, Benedikten-wand,Karwendelgebirge, Jochberg, Herzogstand, Heimgarten, Krot-tenkopf, Wetterstein range with the Zugspitze, and P^ttaler Mandl. Steamboat Journey. On the hill to the right, immediatelybeyond Starnberg, rises the villa of the late Prince Charles of Bavaria(d. 1875). On the bank, farther on, are a number of other villas.Stat. Niederpocking. Possenhofen (Zum Fischmeister) lies about1/2 M. from the railway-station of that name (p. 25). Duke Maxof Bavaria has a chateau here. The garden, enclosed by a high wall,is not shown; but the park, about 2 M. in length, is open to thepublic. Pleasant walk through wood, keeping to the right (way-posts),to (1 M.) Feldafing (*Strauchs Hotel, 1/4 M. from the rail, stat.,beautiful view from the terrace; *H6tel-Pens. Neuschw an stein). Inthe lake below lies the Roseninsel (shown by order obtained fromthe Obersthofmeister at Munich, or from the Rentamt at Starn-.l^rg), near which a lake-village was discovered by Desor.

On the hill above it rises the churchof Aufkirchen. About 1 M. to the N. of the pier is situated the royal chateau ofBerg (adm. 50 pf.), with a beautiful park, where King Lewis II. of Bavariaperished in the lake in June, 1886. The road to it passes through theneat little village of Leoni and then enters the park and skirts the lake.The spot where the bodies of the King and Dr. von Gudden were found inthe lake is indicated by a wooden cross. The chateau is plainly fitted up,and contains paintings and statuettes of scenes and characters from Wag-ners operas. — Berg is a steamboat-station, but is not always stopped at. •Rottmannshohe (20 min.)- The path ascends opposite the landing-place, and at the top of the hill turns to the right to the large Hotelsthe veranda of which commands a beautiful survey of the l
