Passing through this park, we arrive at Teddington, at the headof the tide, and virtually one of the suburbs of the great city, though not embracedwithin its boundaries. Thence onward country seats, in the midst of groundsfamous for the beauty of their trees, become numerous. Ttcickcnham, opposite EelPie Island, a famous resort of Thames anglers and picnic parties, is especiallyfavoured in this respect. Strawberry Hill, the castellated mansion built byHorace Walpole in 1747, lies above this delightful village ; Orleans House, from1852—71 the residence of the Due dAumale, but at present the home of an aristo-cratic club, below it. If we butenter this hibyrinth of streets, we feel as if steam-power alone were able to extri-cate us. Even the liardiest pedestrian yields to fatigue when traversing thisinterminable city. Street follows street, and the chance of obtaining a glimpseof the horizon appears to be a remote one. Houses without end, factories, railwaystations, villas, gardens, and blind brick walls succeed each other in this huge hiveof humanity. Even in the midst of the fields or in the outlying parks wefool that London still surrounds us, for on all sides the houses line the great Fig. SS.—Annual Increase of Population in Thirty-one Cities of Europe.
