Claudes illness did not last long. The next entry in the Liber Veritatis (No. 159) runs thus :— Audy 26 May, 1663, Claude fecit Roma e pour Anvers, the picture referredto being a large landscape with Mercury and Bacchus, now in the collectionof the Duke of Devonshire. The artists energy was unimpaired. Forthe next few years he continued to produce three or four pictures everyyear. His skill, however, was not always on a level with his energy. Hishand, doubtless under the influence of the gout, often seems to have lost 1 Portrait and copy have both unfortunately disappeared, and the only likeness ofClaude with any claim to authenticity is the woodcut by Sandrart in the Academia.

Side by side, however, with canvases which show sadevidences of advancing age, we find others in which the artists geniusreasserts itself with all the old charm. The chief patron of Claudes latter years was the Constable of Naples,Don Filippo Colonna, head of the great Roman family of that name andhusband of the beautiful and witty Maria Mancini, one of Mazarinsnieces, famous for the passion which she inspired in the youthful breastof Louis XIV. and for the escapades of her later life. The Liber Veritatis records eight pictures painted for this nobleman.The first of these would seem, from the already quoted inscription ondrawing No. 158, to have been finished just before the illness whichcaused the artist to make his will.
