The first stone of this edifice waslaid in 1443; and it is probable on several groundsthat the picture was finished in 1447. Grandelots historyof Beaune relates that the bull of Eugenius w^hichauthorized the erection of the building under the in-vocation of St. Anthony was quashed by a bull ofNicholas the Vth (1447—55), who ordered it to beconsecrated under the invocation of the Baptist. Thepresence of Eugenius the IVth and St. Anthony inthe picture may be accepted as proving that it wasfinished before the accession of Nicholas the Vth. 2 Asat Saint Bavon so at Beaune the subject is spreadover nine panels, six of which cover the three centralones. 3 In the centre of the highest panel Christ sits 1 Cologne.
