ven was formless, an utter chaos; thewhole mass was nothing but confusion. Order was firstproduced in the pure ether, and out of it the universecame forth; the universe produced air, and air the milkyway. When the pure male principle Yang had beendiluted it formed the heavens ; the heavy and thick partscoagulated and formed the earth. . . . From the subtleessence of heaven and earth the dual principles Yang and 40 7he Dragon, Image, and Demon, Yin were formed; from their joint operation came thefour seasons, and these, putting forth their energies, gavebirth to all the products of the earth. The warm in-fluence of the Yang being condensed produced fire, andthe finest parts of the fire formed the sun. The coldexhalations of the Yin being likewise condensed producedwater, and the finest parts of the watery substance formedthe moon. By the seminal influence of the sun and mooncame the stars. Thus heaven was adorned with sun, moon,and stars; the earth also received rain, rivers, and dust.
