He isreally a small spitz and came first from Germany.You noticed Tips compact little body, fox-like head,and alert expression. A wonderful little dog. Hischief glory is his fine, fluffy coat and mane. Then there are the English toy spaniels. Theyused to be all called King Charles spaniels and werenamed after Charles II of England, who was veryfond of them. Now the authorities have divided theminto four varieties according to color, though theyare all the same breed. The Blenheim is red or 84 THE DOGS OF BOYTOWN orange and white, the ruby is chestnut red, the KingCharles is black and tan, and the Prince Charles is tri-color—^black, white, and tan. Before that time theyhad been carefully guarded as sacred animals. Yousee they look somewhat different from the Englishtoy spaniel. The head is flatter, for one thing. The Japanese spaniel is still different, though heis probably related to the Peke. He has been the petof the Japs for centuries. The colors are black and ANXIOUS DAYS 85 white or red and white, and the weight is sevenpounds, more or less. This snowy white one, withhis bright Httle face, is a Maltese dog. He also hasan ancient lineage. He was known in ancient Greeceand Rome and has been in England since the time ofHenry VHI. You saw my toy poodle. Its justa miniature of the big poodle and has been popularin France and England for over a century. Verypopular here now, too. Now we come to the last of the more prominentbreeds of toys, and the only one with a wire coat.He comes from Belgiu
