However arranged, the central receiving-stations shouldbe enclosed in buildings. The collection-carts find their wayto them from all directions, and create an unattractive traffic.If these carts could drive into a building, dump their loadsout of the public view, and drive away empty through anotherexit, the oft-repeated objections to such receiving-stationswould be largely removed. In the work of city scavenging,the minority must always suffer somewhat for the benefitof the majority, although in many little ways their grievancescan be lessened. Sorting over, or trimming,** as it is sometimes called,the general refuse, especially the rubbish, as it is brought tothese central receiving-stations, can be made a source of con-siderable revenue, provided the amount of material is suffi-ciently large, and provided the city is so located as to support
