Selection of a Wet-nurse.—It is not necessary that the wet-nurse should have been recently delivered. A newborn baby may begiven the breast of a nurse whose baby is from one to two months ofage. In fact, her milk is preferable to that of a nurse who has justbeen confined. For, apart from the uncertainty as to whether themilk will agree with the baby, the milk after a few weeks attains auniform composition, and is more likely to agree with the baby thanmilk from the breast of a woman recently confined. I prefer to placethe newborn infant on a breast at least three weeks old. The method of examining a wet-nurse as to her fitness beginswith ascertaining
