The manner of working is as follows: Select the designto be copied and the shades of material, have a piece oftin cut out to correspond with each shape to be used,and lay this upon the silks or satins, and outline roundwith a pencil. Cut out the shapes larger than the out-line, to allow of turning in the raw edges, and divide offthe various pieces, keeping together all of one shadeand all of one form. Then cut out upon the paperthe exact outline of the tin plate, leaving nothing forturnings. Tack the paper and the silk piece together,turning the raw edge of the silk over the paper, and Tackingit down so as to keep it from fraying out while working.Arrange the patches thus made on a table, according to

Continueto sew the pieces together until the size required isobtained, then tear the paper away from the silk, and ironthe work upon the wrong side. Line it with twill or somesoft, smooth material, and if it is required for a counter-pane or couvrcpied, wad and quilt the lining; if for amat, handkerchief case, &c, put a ball fringe round it. Patchwork Patterns can be made from geometricalfigures, and are chiefly copied from old Mosaic or Par-queterie designs; however, the designs can he made aselaborate as the worker likes, and they have been carriedto the extent of working coats of arms in their naturalcolours, and pictures containing large-sized figure
